The Happiest Baby on the Block Video

The Happiest Baby on the Block Video

In perhaps the most important parenting work of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries –an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.

No wonder pediatricians are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Michelle Pfeiffer, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

“I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history.”

In an innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. His approach is based on three basic principles:

·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

·The 5 “S’s”: five simple steps that trigger the calming reflex and guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity…and help them sleep longer, too.

Dr. Karp also explains:

How to calm a baby–in mere minutes.

Why new babies can’t be spoiled.

How to get a baby to sleep 1-2 hours longer?

Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the necessary tools to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.

WOW!!! She CAN stop crying!!!, August 21, 2002

After 5 straight weeks of sleepless nights, my husband and I were walking zombies. Our infant would wake every hour to 2 hours throughout the night and just scream. During the day she would also scream uncontrollably – even though the doctor found nothing wrong with her physically. I had convinced myself that she just wasn’t a happy baby like our 6 year old was and life with Isabel would be tough!

Then I searched Amazon one night under “Colic” and found this book and video. Even though we have absolutely no time to read, we did watch the video (while she wailed). My husband tried the swaddling and shhing techniques that night and she quieted down after about 10 minutes. Now 1 week later she calms after 5 min or so AND she is sleeping 4 hours at a time. We feel great and she finally looks peaceful – and not agitated.

Both the book and video are geared toward the first 3 months of life…. and the notion that most babies 1st 3 months of life are really the 4th trimester in their developement. Our first child slept soundly from day one….. but we were blown away with this second one. Thank you Dr. Karp! We finally feel like humans again and the stress level in our home has dropped tremendously.

NEW solutions for crying, difficult babies, July 31, 2004

Raised 3 kids, thought I knew most of the techniques for ssothing babies, helping them through rough days (colic, teething, fussy times). But this video brings NEW research and tips to make life easier for parents of new babies…and if you’re an aunt or grandparent, you’ll learn something new too. SOme of the suggestions are simply amazing, making specific sounds gently into the baby’s ears and seeing an instant, peaceful transformation.

Many of these suggestions come from looking at life from the baby’s perspective and, in retrospect, seem like common sense (but not as easy as it sounds, otherwise there’d be no need for this video). Well worth your viewing time and could bring relief to many an exhausted parent (and baby).

Unbelievable: common sense solutions for crying babies!, September 23, 2003
This review is from: The Happiest Baby on the Block Video (VHS Tape)

Dr. Karp applied common sense to the "problem" of crying babies that most new parents face, by borrowing from traditions being used around the world to calm babies down as if you had "flipped a switch." He acknowledges the existence of a ‘fourth trimester’, i.e. the first three months of the baby’s life and the need to use techniques to make the baby feel as in the mother’s womb to calm him/her down, appealing to their calm reflex.

These techniques are summarized as the five S’s: Swaddling (very tight, to resemble the tight environment of the uterus), Side or Stomach position (otherwise known as the football hold), Shushing (as loud as the baby cries), Swinging (making the head jiggle slightly, to replicate the mom’s movements with the baby in her tummy) and Sucking (with your finger, or a pacifier in place).

As intuitive or odd these techniques may sound to you, you need to view this video: it will probably make the difference for you as it has for so many parents. As I write this, we’re in our last couple of weeks of pregnancy, and we’re ready to apply them to our upcoming baby boy.

What is reasonable to charge for infant care in my home?

Question by mnm4God: What is reasonable to charge for infant care in my home?
I am not yet licensed,so it would be 1 family.
1 infant? 2 infants? 3 infants? Is it more or less for overnight?
It will be approx. 45hrs./wk.

Best answer:

Answer by Steven H
My moms owns a home daycare. And its $ 100 a week for 1 infant, and she charges an extra $ 40 for overnight, she also offers a family special. The best thing to do is get licensed so you can offer childcare to low income families and receive payment from the state if that family receives assistance. But if your just looking for something to do until you get to that point. I would charge about $ 60- $ 70 a week and stay true to your original customers so you can generate the word of mouth advertisement.

Great choice for the small ones!, June 3, 2010
By
B. Reinhart (North Carolina) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Infants’ Stearns Hydroprene Life Vest - Pink (0-30 lbs.) (Health and Beauty)

We have tried 3 other infant life vests for our now 16 month old boy with little success. We began trying vests last summer when he was just 3 months old and the problems experienced with these vests then are the same as now.

The others we tried were -

1. FUEL – Infant life vest. (0-50 lbs) {I’m not sure who makes it, but we got it at Dick’s Sporting Goods store for under . This one required a giraffe’s neck length with the diameter of about a golf ball. VERY uncomfortable.}

2. Cabela’s store-brand infant life vest. (0-30 lbs)

3. Costco’s neon green neoprene infant vest {Again, not sure who makes it, but this one actually worked pretty well, but still wouldn’t allow him to be comfortable in a seated position as he is most of the time when on the boat.} (0-30 lbs)

Our problems with the first two others were:

* Too bulky at the chin/neck – not allowing natural head movement

* Too long in the body – not allowing baby to be in a seated position

* Not enough size adjustability – we weren’t able to get a snug enough fit around the torso to really be comfortable letting him swim with it.

Additionally we noticed the following problem with all 3 vests:

* Too stiff in the body – not allowing natural movement at the waist for bending or reaching.

We have only used this vest once so far and only at the community pool, so I will have to return and update after we’ve taken it on the boat and in the lake. That said – so far, so good.

He fussed at first putting it on – as he does with everything. Within 2 minutes of distractions he was not put-out with it at all. Because of the way the bottom portion of the body is cut, he is able to bend and sit without difficulty. He has a pretty small/average build (21 lbs.) so as he grows it’s only going to get better.

At first glance I was skeptical – the body of the vest is actually VERY thick and appeared as if it would suffocate him. Upon trying it on though, we discovered that the neck opening is very big and the body of the vest does not come into contact with his chin at all. We got it to fit this way by tightening the leg straps so that the head-flap is pushed up against (snugly, but not uncomfortably) the back of his neck. He is able to move his head freely in all directions without complaint.

Overall, we are very satisfied with this purchase! Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

The best out there. Great but a little hard to get around in., December 10, 2007
By

This review is from: Delmar’s Maternal-Infant Nursing Care Plans (Delmar’s Maternal- Infant Nursing Care Plans) (Paperback)

I am a nursing student and purchased this for my pediatric/OB semester to help out with care plans. It is worth the purchase for sure although I recommend flipping around in it before using the index because it’s a little hard to find what you want. For example, if your client has Gestational Diabetes you can’t just find that in the index, you have to look up “nutrition” or other key problems. Also, one care plan may be used for several different problems. The biggest issue I could find with the book is when you go to the page number you want referenced in the index, it will say “See Altered Nutrition” but you have to flip pages trying to find it since there is no clue where the full care plan is. I finally figured out how to use it at the end of the semester and then found out it is on statref! if you already have access to that.

Bottom line is, it’s the best and maybe even only option out there. It is worth the price since it saves time with your care planning.

Q&A: How much would you pay or do you charge for infant private care at their home?

Question by Mommy Ong: How much would you pay or do you charge for infant private care at their home?
How much would you pay or do you charge for infant private care at their home? In California nannies make between 16-22/hour to go to peoples homes. Day cares typically make 5/hour b/c they have mass amounts of children. Whats fair? What would you pay? This is for an infant!

Best answer:

Answer by LovelyEmily
I wouldn’t pay anything because infancy is the most important time of their development and I wouldn’t want anyone but me raising my child at that time. It’s priceless.
