not so good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception (Paperback)
I really wanted to like this book. I wasn’t even expecting it to have lots of information that I didn’t already know, having done a ton of research myself in my role as fertility counselor, but thought that it would be slightly helpful at least. It was not. It was instead incomplete and incorrect. Conclusions made are inconsistent – thing A is to be treated with caution because its safety for pregnant women is unproven, whereas thing B is considered safe because it has never been shown to cause problems. Where is the logic here? There is no difference between “never been shown to cause problems” and “safety unproven”. And if there is a difference in the proven safety of these two things, it should be stated explicitly rather than left at these two vague comments. Some statements are just plain incorrect. For example, it is stated that ovulation is the day of the basal body temperature rise, when in fact the temperature rise usually occurs the day following ovulation. Also, intercourse on this day is stated to give the best chance of conception. This is incorrect whichever way you look at it – intercourse on the day of the temperature rise is usually too late (being the day after ovulation, the egg is often dead by then), and intercourse on the day of ovulation is still not the best timing (for those who are interested, intercourse the day before ovulation is best, although difficult to time). I have to wonder what other “facts” in this book are downright wrong. Finally, conclusions are drawn without sharing the information used to make them. It is claimed that a woman who has no immunity to rubella must get vaccinated, stating that the potential risks of the vaccine far outweigh the benefits. Nowhere is it mentioned that an adult woman receiving the rubella vaccine has much higher risk of serious medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and thrombocytopenia, and that according to the CDC the incidence of rubella in the US is extremely low. Whether or not the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the risks is something for women to decide for themselves, with all pertinent information. Now, I would expect a book written by two doctors to side more often with medical gospel than not, but I was very surprised by the lack of portrayal of the other side of the issues. Or more to the point, that some things were treated as complete non-issues: women are encouraged to run right out and get the flu and chicken pox shots, with no mention of their risks or efficacy. I should say that I did find the information on weight, diet, and exercise to be very thorough and mostly consistent with other reading I have done. Still, I simply cannot recommend this book.

The Best Book On Pre-Conception and Pregnancy Too!, By

This review is from: Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception (Paperback)
I am usually too lazy to bother to type reviews. However, I HAD to write on on this book. If you are like me in that you want from a pre-pregnancy/pregnancy book: - thoroughness then you will not be disppointed by this book. I bought this first, before I conceived, to make sure that I was doing all I could/ should to prepare my body for pregnancy. This book addressed the whole range of issues related to this, and in a very clear, readable (lots of graphics to explain things) yet extremely authoritative manner. The authors have their credentials and this comes through clearly. I have very high expectations of books, especially when they are on such an important topic as pregnancy. Up-to-date info. is mandatory–not optional–and this books has it. After I became pregnant, I bought many other pregnancy books, but kept coming back to this one. The others are better for describing what is going on month-by-month, etc., but NONE are better for general medical reference info. For example, this is the only book I have found that breaks down herbs into 3 categories (“Safe During Pregnancy”, “Herbs That Warrant Caution” and “Herbs to Avoid”) and clasifies every major herb you are likely to encounter (in teas, body creams, etc.). They also describe common concerns/ probelms in a very user-friendly yet authoritative manner, and told me all I needed to know about continuing to exercise safely throughout pregnancy. Plus the tone of the book is very positive, reassuring and upbeat. I can’t say enough about this book. It is my pregnancy bible.

This review is from: Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception (Paperback)
I’ve read and looked through a lot of "pre-pregnancy" books over the past few months but this one is not only the most helpful and up-to-date one I’ve come across, but also it is the LEAST panic-inducing. So many other books devote more than half the text to fertility problems, which only served to heighten my paranoia and fear about that very issue. This book took a very calm and rational approach to ALL topics that need to be covered during the pre-conception time, and I really appreciated that. I also really liked the tone of this book. It was friendly and informative yet confident and authoritative. I did not feel like there was lecturing going on (which is good as lecturing, let’s be honest, can sometimes trigger a "I don’t care what you say, I’m gonna do such-and-such anyway!" reaction), but rather like the authors were part of my "preconception team," working WITH me and my husband towards achieving the goal of a healthy and happy pregnancy. |

May 2000 Edition of "Getting Pregnant" is my New Bible!, By
This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What You Need To Know Right Now (Paperback)
I suffer from infertility and endometriosis. The latest edition of "Getting Pregnant" is excellent and a huge improvement from the last edition. It has been completely revised and updated for the millenium with all of the latest information on infertility treatment and fertility procedures. I feel that this would be one of the most helpful books for anyone who is trying to get pregnant (and I own A LOT of fertility books). I also consider this to be a great source of information for couples who are suffering from infertility. The 2000 edition contains a bunch of new information and is twice the size of the 1992 edition. It includes the more "advanced" fertility info on immune disorders, male infertility, diet & "fertility foods", preventing miscarriage, new fertility surgeries, latest on high-tech fertility procedures, latest on fertility drugs and as well as the more basic information on how to increase your chances of conceiving, etc. (stuff for "beginners"). I finally did conceive last month, but I sadly miscarried 2 weeks ago. I was looking for pregnancy loss books, when I noticed that my "Getting Pregnant" book had been updated. I decided to purchase this book instead of a miscarriage book. I am really glad I did! It has helped me look forward to resuming my infertility treatment so I can try to get pregnant again. I am also looking forward to discussing many of the things that I learned from this book with my Reproductive Endocrinologist at our next consultation. I really appreciate how encouraging Dr. Laurensen is. He is positive and upbeat, while remaining realistic. I am going through a really difficult time right now and this book has "lifted my spirits" a little bit. The book is also very easy to read, eventhough it covers some very technical stuff. It is very "reader-friendly"! Much thanks to Dr. Laurensen and Ms. Bouchez for revising and updating their book!

Very helpful for all women who want to conceive, By
This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What You Need To Know Right Now (Paperback)
I unintentionally stumbled upon this book in a bookstore in 1996 while trying to conceive my first child. I was not having fertility problems but before reading this book was going on information from my OB/GYN about how to achieve pregnancy regarding timing of relations and the “window of opportunity” for conception. I figured I’d read the book for the heck of it to see if there was something useful in it that went above and beyond the information my doctor already provided me with. I was happy to find a very easy to read format and very understandable information. I was surprised to find different information regarding timing of relations with ovulation than my own doctor had given me. Specifically I learned that if I followed my doctor’s method, conception would be far less likely to take place (according to the author/doctor) than if I followed the information recommended in his book. I learned the details of the fertility cycle and specific information about using (the inexpensive) ovulation predictor kits to help narrow down the fertility “window”. At the time, I thought it humorous to read of intentional gender selection. I learned that gender selection does have a scientific reason and factors under the control of the woman and man can determine the gender of the baby. I did have a thought that a certain gender as a firstborn would be nice. I decided to follow the instructions in the book exactly and see if I’d conceive a certain gender. With the use of (the least expensive) ovulation predictor kits from the drug store I was happy to achieve pregnancy on the first month of following these directions. Additionally I ended conceiving a baby of my “choice” of gender, after following the instructions for that gender. Women talk to each other about pregnancy and infertility; it is a natural thing between women, especially between pregnant women and women who are already mothers. As my friends and co-workers would tell me of their infertility problems or mention they want to begin trying, I explained that this book helped me, and I recommended that they read this book and educate themselves rather than just follow what their OB/GYN or Infertility specialist said to do. (I did not and am not recommending to ignore a doctor’s advice, but to supplement it with self-knowledge obtained by reading this book.) Eleven women that I lent my book to ended up pregnant after reading this book and following the directions regarding timing, understanding their fertility cycle, and general nutritional recommendations. (I was so surprised at the success rate that I kept track of the numbers.) The women undergoing infertility treatment and procedures told me this book recommended more frequent intercourse than their own doctors did. The women who wanted a certain gender followed those instructions and every one of them conceived the gender they tried for. The women who didn’t have a gender preference achieved pregnancy with a “surprise” gender and were happy. What bothered me about the book was the detailed information about miscarriage and infertility treatments. Since I was not officially considered infertile I didn’t have an interest in this and found those sections scary. I chose stop reading those chapters because at that point I was not considered medially “infertile”. Instead I concentrated on the lifestyle recommendations that were definitely under my control such as nutrition, what to avoid eating or being exposed to, fertility cycle information, and conception and gender selection tips. My point is that this book is helpful even if you have not yet officially begun trying to conceive and is still helpful if you are not officially deemed “infertile”. Knowledge is power. I feel that every person should educate themselves about issues they are concerned with. Even if you are seeking the advice of a doctor or even an infertility specialist, I recommend you educate yourself about the topic. This is a very good book about achieving pregnancy, read it! Don’t just rely on experts, become informed yourself. The price of this book is so much lower than expensive ovulation predictor kits and ovulation predictor computer programs. Rather than immediately think there is something wrong with your body, read this book first and see if you really are setting yourself up for success. Before rushing off to get a consult with an infertility specialist read this and make sure you have been “doing things right”. If you have already been diagnosed with an infertility problem, then you definitely should read this and educate yourself, as it will help you have meaningful discussions and more able to make informed choices when talking with your infertility specialist.

very, very detailed, By
This review is from: Getting Pregnant: What You Need To Know Right Now (Paperback)
This book goes into excruciating detail about fertility and all factors that may enhance or detract from fertility. You’ll learn more about the female and male reproductive systems from this book than you’ll learn from any biology course. The authors discuss in detail all types of things that can threaten fertility (endometriosis, PID, fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts, abortions, IUDs, ectopic pregnancies) and discusses how to avoid them. They also cover workplace threats to fertility, STDs, how your OB can help protect your fertility — After discussing fertility issues, the authors move to how to conceive, discussing sex, body fat & dieting, fitness, stress, diet, and other preparations. The book even boasts of a “revolutionary fertility diet.” Finally, the authors discuss the many ways that science can help you conceive — fertility surgeries, treatments for male infertility, drugs, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and donor egg and embryo transplant. I found this book to be like a textbook of sorts — comprehensive & full of “evidence” and “facts.” Frankly, I think there is way too much information in the book to be useful as a general guide; rather it would be more useful as a reference book for how to deal with specific issues. Nonetheless, given the pain associated with fertility issues, it’s all worth a try. |

I know a enough about trying to conceive and was looking for something a little more. I figured at .99 I couldn’t go wrong at least trying this out. (Got it for my Kindle.) Everything in here I already knew and it looks like a high school essay on pregnancy. It uses the term “which you already know” and similar statements several times. Save your and put toward something better. If you buy 5 like this then your half way to having the money for something better. |

Baby #1 or Baby #4, this is a must read for large women!, By
This review is from: Big, Beautiful, and Pregnant: Expert Advice and Comforting Wisdom for the Expecting Plus-Size Woman (Paperback)
I am glad that I purchased this book – if for nothing else than to support writers and publishers trying to reach the quite large crowd of … ahem… large, pregnant women! We’re trying to conceive number 4 after a 5 year break from having babies. I am bigger than ever and for the first time I am having a hard time conceiving. I am also anxiety riddled by the thought of getting pregnant and having my obesity affect the pregnancy. Thanks to this book, I am not scared. YES there are some extra things to consider. YES I may have to lose a few pounds if I am not regularly ovulating. But NO I shouldn’t stop my dream of a fourth and final child because I am large. THANKS to this book, I now 5have a better understanding of the things I should worry about, the statistics, and the diet I should consume. While there is a lot of info in this book that’s also found in general pregnancy books, I do think that a large woman should have one that discusses in detail every aspect of pregnancy from the large-woman’s viewpoint. So I do recommend this book! No matter whether you’re mainstream or more natural-minded, large or not, I highly recommend The Natural Pregnancy Book: Herbs, Nutrition and Other Holistic Choices by Aviva Jill Romm as well as her postpartum book. They’re meant for everyone, not just “natural” parents. And please do yourself a favor and DON’T order that Pregnancy Week By Week book! You don’t need the extra fear it instills when you’re worried enough about your pregnancy.

Great book for Plus sized women & prenatal care providers, By
This review is from: Big, Beautiful, and Pregnant: Expert Advice and Comforting Wisdom for the Expecting Plus-Size Woman (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It hads lots of good info about staying healthy, eating right, & exercising during pregnancy. It also did not beat overweight women up for wanting a child or becoming pregnant. I love the fact that an ob/gyn and a plus-sized mom contributed. The book outlines truthfully the risks of pregnancy to overweight women & their babies, but gives practical ways to minimize the risks. It was upbeat, and a fast, easy read that I will probably return to many times.

Help and encouragement for plus-sized pregnant women, By
Rhea Mc (California) – See all my reviews
This review is from: Big, Beautiful, and Pregnant: Expert Advice and Comforting Wisdom for the Expecting Plus-Size Woman (Paperback)
I am pregnant with my first baby and have been worried sick about my weight. I found this book, cowritten by a doctor and a plus-sized mom, to be an excellent resource. It answers my many weight-related health/medical questions, offers encouragement that my pregnancy can be absolutely healthy and successful, and gives me the sense that I have every right to relax and enjoy this special time. Chapter One is a general overview about the kinds of issues plus-size women might face during pregnancy (medical, emotional, nutrition, finding support, etc.). The rest of the book expands on these themes. I especially liked the chapter on prenatal health care and how plus-size women can make sure they are receiving supportive, unbiased care from their ob or midwife. There are many first hand stories from plus-size women in every chapter, but the accounts in this one especially struck a chord with me. The Medical Question and Answer chapter addresses every last weight-related pregnancy question you could ever have. I like that it is divided by trimesters, since it definitely seems like every trimester brings with it a new set of worries. The advice is honest, but at the same time positive and encouraging. You are pointed towards the steps you can take to reduce your risks for experiencing any health problems. Another chapter gives plus-size advice specifically about labor and delivery. If you are looking for an extremely informative book for plus-size pregnancy, look no further. Bottom line — an enjoyable book that will make you feel better about your pregnancy! |

Is there evidence that pregnancy causes the mother to develop an autoimmune disease?
Question by Amanda: Is there evidence that pregnancy causes the mother to develop an autoimmune disease?
My grandmother and a cousin both developed severe rheumatic autoimmune diseases after pregnancy, when being previously fine before pregnancy. I have not been able to find any additional evidence of pregnancy causing an autoimmune disease to develop, but am wondering if anyone knows of a link between the two, either clinical or anecdotal.
I realize that pregnancy has effects on women who already have autoimmune diseases, but am trying to weigh the risks of developing an illness from being pregnant. Any additional information would be very helpful. Thank you!

Answer by rancho
looks like you have a familial idiopathic history of rheumatism. you’ll have to weigh the risks/benefits in your own mind. there IS a definite chance you could develop it; however, maybe it would be worth it to you to bring a child into this world.
What do you think? Answer below!
