- 1). Gently wash your face with a mild cleanser. There's no need to spend a lot of money on expensive soaps. Cetaphil and Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash can be found at most pharmacies.
- 2). Exfoliate your face once or twice a week. Exfoliating lotions use a very mild abrasive ingredient to remove dead skin and oils that block pores. Exfoliating too often will not eliminate acne quicker; it will only dry and irritate your skin.
- 3). Use a spot-on treatment. The Mayo Clinic suggests over-the-counter acne medications that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, resorcinol, alcohol or acetone. Labels on acne-treatment products will clearly list their active ingredients.
- 4). Read the ingredients of any product you use on your skin. If you are prone to acne breakouts, you want to use oil-free makeup and lotions.
